Newborn shoot tips: capturing your baby's real moments

Many parents look forward immensely to their newborn photoshoot. But almost everyone has the same small concern: what if my baby does nothing but cry?

That also happened, for example, during little Novi-Lou's newborn shoot. While I was there, she cried quite a bit and was only truly calm for brief moments. Nevertheless, we managed to capture beautiful images. Not despite those moments, but precisely because of them.

That happens to be the strength of my working methods.

No posed perfection, but real life

There are many newborn photographers who work with carefully positioned babies, blankets, and props. That can be beautiful, but it is not my style.

I prefer to work from real life. How your baby lies in your arms. How a parent gently comforts when a tear comes. How a baby stretches, yawns, or is restless for a moment.

Those small moments are often far more meaningful than a perfectly posed image. They show how this period really felt . Life behind closed doors, exactly as it is.

For Novi-Lou, that sometimes meant pausing for a moment, rocking or feeding, and then calmly continuing. And in between those moments, images emerged that show exactly what the first weeks with a baby can be like: loving, a little chaotic, but above all, very real.

How do you prepare for a newborn photoshoot?

A newborn shoot doesn't have to go perfectly to capture beautiful images. However, a few small preparations can help make the moment run more smoothly.

1. Plan the shoot for a quiet time of day. Many parents choose a time when their baby is often sleeping or has been fed. This often provides a bit more calm during the shoot.

2. Ensure a warm and quiet environment. Babies feel more comfortable when it is warm and comfortable. A quiet room with soft light often works best.

3. Keep clothing simple. Neutral colors and calm fabrics usually work best in photos. Think of soft shades such as cream, beige, or light earth tones. This way, the focus remains on you and your baby.

4. Don't expect perfect behavior. Babies cry, move, and have their own rhythm. That is completely normal. During a newborn shoot, we always make room for that.

5. Focus on the moment, not on the photo. When parents are relaxed and simply focused on their baby, the most beautiful images often emerge naturally.

It is precisely the small moments that make it special.

During the shoot with Novi-Lou, there were moments of restlessness, but also moments of calm. A small smile, a glance towards her parents, or a moment when she lay against her mother for a moment.

Those are exactly the images that mean so much later. Not because they are perfect, but because they are real.

And ultimately, that is what a newborn shoot is all about: capturing a small piece of your life as it is at that moment.

Are you thinking about a newborn photoshoot?

Whether your baby is sleeping, crying, or just looking around curiously, everything is part of this phase.

During a newborn shoot, we take our time and move along with your baby. This creates images that are not only beautiful but, above all, show how this special period truly felt.
