Tips for playful winter couple portraits in Värmland

A love shoot in the snow might sound romantic, but how do you ensure it also feels playful, natural, and full of connection? In February, I traveled with Moise and Calvin to the Tossenberg, between Sunne and Torsby in Värmland, for a love shoot that would reflect their adventure in Sweden. The thick layer of snow, the winter light, and their enthusiasm made it an unforgettable experience – and at the same time, a perfect opportunity to share tips for couple portraits in nature.
The story behind the shoot
Moise and Calvin primarily wanted playful photography that captures their fun and energy. No stiff poses, but real interaction, laughter, and moments where you can see how they know and appreciate each other. Fortunately, the road to the Tossenberg had been cleared, allowing us to easily start our hike up. The first spontaneous images emerged along the way, and once at the top, we enjoyed the view, the snow, and each other's company.
For me, a love shoot isn't just about beautiful images, but about telling the couple's story. That's why I provide guidance where necessary, but let the interaction flow as naturally as possible. By walking together, gently nudging each other in the snow, or simply looking into each other's eyes, those moments are created that will still make you smile years later.

Tips for a successful love shoot in the snow
Choose the right time of day – golden hour provides soft light that enhances the atmosphere and colors of winter. Start a little earlier or later to capture that magical glow.
Focus on movement and interaction – let each other hold hands, hug, throw a snowball, or gently push. This creates dynamism and genuine connection.
Clothing and layers – make sure you stay warm, but try to choose colors that contrast with the snow. Neutral or earth tones often work beautifully in winter.
Make use of the surroundings – mountains, trees, snowfields, or even small details like a snow-covered branch can enhance the story of your shoot.
How to get the most out of your love shoot
A love shoot is not just a photo session; it is a moment to capture your connection and fun together. By allowing yourselves to play, move, and simply be, the most beautiful, natural images emerge. Small moments—a smile, a glance, or a touch—make all the difference and ensure that your photos truly tell your story.
Tips to make your shoot extra special:
Choose a location where you feel comfortable and where you can move around, walk, or play.
Let the photographer move along instead of posing; spontaneous moments are often the most powerful.
Use ambient light, such as the golden hour in winter, for warm, atmospheric images.
This way, your love shoot becomes not only a beautiful series of photos, but also a memory of how it felt to be together in the moment.
The result
The photos of Moise and Calvin showcase their energy, fun, and love. From walking through the snow to the soft, intimate moments where they look into each other—everything feels natural and real. It is a love shoot that captures not only the winter and the location, but also their unique connection.
